Friday July 10, 2009 18:08:00 EDT
(RTTNews) - Drug maker Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) Friday said the FDA approved Effient tablets, a blood-thinning drug that will reduce the risk of blood clots forming in patients who undergo angioplasty, a procedure to unblock a clogged coronary artery. The company plans to launch the drug in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
With this approval, Effient will be directly competing with blockbuster drug, Plavix made by Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY). Like Plavix, which fetched $4.9 billion last year, Effient is expected to cross the $1 billion mark in its annual sales.
The blood-thinner was discovered by Japanese drug maker Daiichi Sankyo Co. Ltd. (DSKY (continued...)
